“Fire and Ice” is such a cliche, and yet Luisa’s photo is compelling and beautiful. Too often I think when people feel they must be “creative,” they stagnate, hoping to find that thing that’s “never been done before.” This seems especially true in teens, as they search for an identity apart from anything that has come before them. As we get older, we can more gracefully accept that interpretations, points of view and outlook are even more fresh and new than simple content. Indeed, the perspective that the “slings and arrows” of our lives lend to us imbue well-worn subjects with depth of meaning that are absent from most inexperienced expressions.
