There are 4 parts to knowing ourselves. The 1st is where we spend so much of our time these days: being aware of the moment, following our emotions down the tendrils of their roots. That knowledge that comes from meditation, prayer and silence.
But the other 3 are equally important. They are: knowing the group to which you belong; knowing your relationship to that group, and knowing that the group knows you.
The absence of any of these leads to a diminished sense of self, I think, and can remain as a real roadblock to authentic happiness. What’s really difficult is when we don’;t even know to consider them!
