Innocence

In my job, I deal with kids ages 14-18. That’s young.

I also deal with: alcoholism, drug abuse, rape, sexual, physical and emotional abuse, self-mutilation, prostitution, pregnancies and abortions, depression, mental illness of all stripes and a persistent cynicism and hopelessness. This is part of the world of these kids, and sometimes it is the world of their parents. It is always a part of *our* world, but what I want everyone to know is: who is protecting our kids from these things?

Who in the world is keeping these kids safe? If not their parents, not the government, not our society, then no one. They are innocents, in a real sense of the word, and they are being sacrificed.
